Burberry Festive Glow Set

Burberry Festive Glow Set House of Paper Doll

Its the most wonderful time of the year and I can already hear the jingle bells in the near distance which also means Festive Holiday Sets from Brands aplenty.  Each year I look forward to seeing which brands will come up with the goods that will catch my eye, and this year one of them was Burberry.  Maybe its the British girl in me who used to stereo-typically pound the London pavements in my Burberry Mac, snuggled up in my Burberry scarf carrying a quintessential British black umbrella trying to hail a black cab on Regent Street, or maybe it was the shiny gold packaging that seemed to glisten and glow in photos of this set, but something really resonated with me as soon as I came across this Burberry delight on Sephora and I knew it was one for Santa’s good list.

At $100.00 this is one of the more expensive festive makeup-sets I have come across, but after all it is Burberry and they seem to be all about a luxe Christmas Season, oozing luxury from every angle in their shiny gold checked packaging.  The products themselves seemed to be infusioned with gold in one form or another so for Burberry 2016 is certainly a golden Christmas.

The set itself includes a decent size Makeup Bag which was actually a little larger than I was expecting but still ideal for everyday.  The shape of the bag with the 2 zips at the top allows for a generous opening and equally generous interior size and there proudly displaying the gleaming golden treasures of Burberry products to behold.  On the Sephora website this bag actually looked pink and grey checked which is what I fell in love with, so I was a little disappointed when it arrived and I discovered the bag is more of a neutral stone/clay kind of colour, certainly no pink and certainly not what shows on Sephora.  However the bag has grown on me because its subtle and the checks are subtle, it looks and feels good quality if a little rubbery.

Inside the set includes 3 full size products and 2 travel/sample size products.

Festive Edition Fresh Glow Luminous Fluid Base – This is the one product I had really high hopes for as I have been frantically searching for a decent dupe for MAC’s discontinued Strobe Liquid (not to be confused with their Strobe Cream) and after reading some reviews about this product I was really keen to try it.  I have to say I love it, its still not a perfect match for my beloved Strobe Liquid but its the closest I have come across to give me that same ‘glow from within’ natural look and feel.  You can wear this under foundation or as I like to mix it with my foundation and then add a little extra as a highlight on the tops of my cheeks.  It really is beautiful in a subtle, luminous way and it feels so smooth and hydrating on my dry skin.  A perfect way to add an inner glow for the party season (and morning after!).  You also get a travel size of this product and whilst I was a little surprised to receive 2 products of the same thing in the same set I actually don’t mind at all because I love it so much.

Festive Edition Burberry Kisses Hydrating Lip Colour – On Sephora’s website it says the lipstick is Military Red but I received Parade Red which is more of a pinky red but surprisingly I like it.  I don’t generally reach for a red lipstick on a regular basis but for this one I feel I will make the exception.  The product itself is so creamy and hydrating on the lips, it just glides on and feels so luxurious and soft, perfect for the chapped-lips Winter months.  It also has great staying power which is perfect to see you through the Christmas Parties and because the packaging is so shiny it almost acts as a mirror to apply the lipstick if you run short of one, bonus!  Its also not a lipstick you mind reapplying in front of people because the packaging is beautiful and the embossed Burberry check on the product itself is stunning.

Eye Colour Cream in Festive Gold – This cream eyeshadow was ok, I wasn’t blown away but I didn’t dislike it either.  Its very glittery and doesn’t really show up on the lid that well on first application.  I feel you have to use quite abit of product to get any effect, having said that I do like how it looks and it works well with the red lipstick in the set to create a nude but festive nude lid, you just have to dig abit deep.  The product is ideal as highlighter in the inner corner of the eye or spray abit of Mac’s Fix+ on your eye brush and use the product wet for a better colour payoff.  I can see myself reaching for this on the long hot Summer nights to add a touch of gold to my beach/holiday makeup so its a great multi-Seasonal product in that respect.

My Burberry Black Perfume Sample – This for me is the most disappointing product in the set, it is tiny, its like a sample you get from a magazine.  I was expecting a travel size just not a teeny tiny size, I kind of wish they had left this out altogether because it lets the set down especially as a gift for someone.  On a plus note its saving grace is that I like the scent, its a combination of sun-drenched jasmine, peach nectar with candid rose and amber patchouli.  At first I wasn’t sure but it’s grown on me.  If you like floral scents it may not be your cup of tea as there are distinctive masculine tones to this perfume, but that’s what I like about it, its a manly women’s fragrance.  Scents are so personal and can smell different on different people so its always hard to recommend a perfume, but if you are passing a department store anytime soon and are after something a little different then have a spritz of this and see what you think.

My Thoughts:  To begin with I was slightly disappointed with this set, and if I am being honest when I first opened it I felt it looked more like a ‘gift with purchase’ rather than a $100 Festive Gift Set, there was no box like some of the other Burberry Sets, it wasn’t packaged in anyway and the fact that 2 of the items are sample size and one a super small sample size at that, made it abit of a let down.  That said it has grown on me and now I really do like it and I am glad I purchased it.  My favourite product by far is the Festive Glow Luminous Base, which is a good job as I have the full size and travel/sample size in the set, but this is a product I can see myself wearing alot and one I would purchase again.  Also surprising for me is the lipstick as I am not a big red lipstick wearer at all however I really like how this brightens my face and I can see myself wearing this quite abit over the holiday season.  All in all the products themselves do feel luxurious and of beautiful quality, from the packaging, to the application, to the feel and look on the skin.  The products within the set also compliment each other magnificently.  The disappoint lies in the misleading photo and information on Sephora’s website and the tiny size of the perfume, however as mentioned the set is a grower, so maybe it will be a golden Christmas afterall.
