Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara – Waterproof vs Original

When it comes to adorable packaging and fabulous fun makeup I think Too Faced reigns supreme.  I love their cheeky, eye-catching, cruelty-free brand as a whole, they do produce some great products, and one product in particular has become somewhat of a cult beauty product.  The Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara is quite a title, and quite a claim!  But most importantly is it worth the hype?  And which is better the Waterproof version or the Original formula?

To begin I have to confess that I am not really a huge Waterproof Mascara fan.  For some reason most Waterproof Mascaras irritate my eyes if worn on a daily basis so generally I tend to stick to original formulas for daily-use.  I only really wear Waterproof mascara on occasions such as –  1) if its a scorching hot day where just about anything is going to melt on my face,  2) if I am hitting the beach or heading to the pool,  3) if I have a feeling I’m going to be doing my fair share of crying (e.g Weddings, Funerals or watching the Bette Midler movie Beaches).

In its girly pink packaging and with its hourglass shaped brush – the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara (Original version) has become my favourite mascara of the past year.  I absolutely love it, I use it every day, and I love how you can wear it quite simple and natural, but easily build this mascara up to a dramatic and intense look.  The wand brush allows you separate the lashes on application and helps with the curl of the lash too.   This mascara doesn’t irritate my eyes nor does it have a strong smell like some can.  I have not yet experienced any major clumping or any flaking at all under the eye through the day.  There is no smudging or panda eyes reported here either.  Just full, extended lashes in my favourite kind of intense black colour that gives my small, deep-set eyes more definition and a little more pop.  It does contain a film-forming polymer for smudge-proof, all-day wear and it performs brilliantly.

In its green water-splashed effect packaging, again with the same hourglass shaped brush the Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara tends to be abit more hit and miss with people, including myself.  As mentioned above Waterproof Mascaras and I aren’t exactly bosom beauty buddies and to be honest I wasn’t blown away by the Waterproof formula on me.  If I wear it on occasions I don’t suffer with any irritation but to use it daily I did find after a while my eyes starting to itch by the end of the day.  On myself this mascara just didn’t have the same effect as the original formula once you start to really layer it.  However, I have used this on some of my Brides and the result is really quite the opposite – full lashes that stay smudge proof, flake-free and transfer free throughout the day.  So I do think it depends on ‘your’ lashes as to how this mascara will work.  I now keep this in my kit rather than in my own makeup drawer, it’s one I continue to repurchase for my kit because I think the ‘Waterproof’ aspect of this mascara is great for some clients.  I have had Brides email me after their Wedding saying how well the mascara held up through the happy tears of their big day.  And whilst I still don’t think it has the dramatic or intense feel the original formula does, I do think if you are looking for a decent waterproof mascara its worth a try – you will either love it or leave it.

Overall I think mascara’s really depend on how you like your lashes to look and for what occasion, and also how a mascara works with the lashes you already have.  My lashes are naturally quite long but not very full, but most ‘full lash’ mascaras leave them really clumpy and prone to lots of flaking through the day which I am glad to say is something neither of these mascaras did.  In terms of value for money these mascaras are on more of the pricey side at £19.00 (GBP) each and so my quest for my Holy Grail mascara still continues.  So which is a keeper?  My favourite by far is the original version, its a great all rounder with instant effects, and it gives me ‘my kind’ of desired lash look, and whilst I’m not quite sure that it is better than sex, it is one helluva good mascara.
