Whilst contouring has been around for Centurys, in recent years it seems to have made a huge revival with Instagram full of faces contoured to perfection and Celebrities hardly photographed without a contoured look. Many brands have brought out their version of contouring kits and tools in the past few years, all in their quest to aid us to that perfectly chiseled cheek and slimmer looking face – some have been hugely successful and others have left us feeling if it’s all really worth the hassle.
For me contouring has often been reduced to events or evenings out and even then I prefer more of a subtle contour to anything heavy. One reason is that I normally find contouring to be pretty time consuming and as a Mom whose household is a pretty hectic one in a morning, I am all about a quick and easy natural makeup look and application – one that’s suitable for the school run and grocery shop as opposed to anything looking too ‘made up’.
When Charlotte Tilbury launched the recent ‘Hollywood Collection‘ which included a contour kit that claims to add a touch of ‘Hollywood’ to your everyday look I was more than intrigued. Largely because as my current favourite brand whenever Charlotte releases any new product I know I will be swooning, but also because the products are all about contouring in a quick and easy way – its like it was made for us girls-on-the-go that want quick and easy results without lots of morning hassle.
Hollywood Contour Wand – The Contour Products on offer are the Hollywood Contour Wand which is available in 2 shades – Light to Medium and Medium to Dark. This product is your contour, your gateway to those Hollywood Chiseled Cheeks in a creamy contour formula, all perfectly packaged in a handbag/makeup bag friendly wand. No palettes, no mess and super easy to use. Currently Priced at £29.00.
Hollywood Beauty Light Wand – The other product is the Hollywood Beauty Light Wand – this is your Hollywood light in a perfectly packaged wand. It comes in one shade that is suitable for all skin types and tones, and again it’s a creamy formula to compliment the Hollywood Contour Wand. Currently priced at £29.99.
Hollywood Complexion Brush – Completing the Hollywood Contour Set is this beautiful 2-in-1 brush that just screams elegance. This small double ended brush has one side that is larger with flat top bristles for blending the contour and softening any harsh lines. The other side which is smaller with flat angled bristles is for more precise contouring (e.g nose shaping) and concealing. This is my first Charlotte Tilbury Makeup brush and I know it definitely won’t be my last, not only is it cruelty-free, it also has such soft bristles and is again the perfect handbag/makeup bag size (although you wouldn’t really want to hide it away). Currently priced at £30.00.
Packaging: Both the Contour and Highlight wands are packaged in thin squeezable tubes with a pull off lid and a sponge tip applicator. At 12ml each they are travel-friendly and light in weight.
How to Apply:
To Contour – Simply open the cap on the Hollywood Contour wand, twist the tube to ‘on’ and squeeze, you will see some product start to come through on the sponge tip, then simply draw the contour lines on your face. For everyday I just do the hollows of my cheekbone but you can use this anywhere on the face, under the chin, the nose, the forehead, etc – then simply take the 2-in-1 brush and buff the creamy product gently into the cheek and voila! Contouring made easy.
To Highlight – Same as above but with the Hollywood Beauty Light Wand, you open the cap top, twist the tube to ‘on’ and squeeze gently til you see some product start to produce onto the sponge tip, then off you go to add your highlight. For me I use this just above my cheek bone, but again this could also be used on the nose, under the brow, anywhere that you want to create light to the face.
Overall Thoughts – All in all I found this to be a fun and pretty fool-proof way to contour, you basically draw a few lines on on your face and blend – super easy, super quick and super results. I loved both the contour wand and the highlight, at first I thought the contour wand might be a little dark but once it was blended it seemed to match just perfectly and really did give me that Hollywood Cheekbone of dreams whilst still looking natural which is how I like my makeup The Light to Medium shade was neither too ashy, too brown or too bronze looking. The highlighter is just beautiful, it reminds me of the old Hollywood Black and White portraits where the actresses have that amazing light that just literally lights up their face – and that’s just it – it just gives you a beautiful glow from within that makes your complexion look healthy whilst still natural. There’s also no shimmer or glitter in either product.
I like that the products didn’t budge my makeup underneath like some products can, I applied both wands over foundation and the highlighter over some powder blusher and there was no caking, streaking or moving of any product underneath. I would also say the brush is definitely the ideal add-on item, it works perfectly with both products and I love that its double ended, I use the larger end for buffing in the contour and the smaller end for buffing in some of the highlighter, so you only need that one brush to achieve the desired look.
I am seriously impressed by all 3 products, especially the contour wand, and they are now part of my quick everyday makeup routine. Plus who wouldn’t want to add a little touch of Hollywood Red Carpet magic to their makeup bag in a morning?
